Post by: BigAl on June 26, 2018, 11:07:42 PM
Once again we have an opportunity to do a weekend outing at Treasure Valley in Marion County, North Carolina. The potential weekend is August 4th weekend. The details will be the same as previous outings. I need to know how many would be interested.

Thanks,

Here is the information:

This is a weekend outing. It will begin Friday August 3 at 1:00 pm and end at 4:00pm on Sunday, August 5, Camping is available and included in the cost There are limited hookups available. Hotels are available along the interstate. The nearest Interstate access in exit 86 in Marion, North Carolina. It is approximately 10 miles from the property.

The property has a history of gold mining going back to the 1800s and is along South Muddy creek in Marion County. The cost per mining adult for the weekend will be $75. Children under 12 are free as are non-mining adults. Panning, sluicing, and dredging are available (a limit on the number of dredges will be imposed). The geology at this location is extremely diverse and includes not only gold, but corundum, epidote, topaz, smoky quartz. The geological features include pegmatites, amphibolites, and other ultramafic exposures. Diamonds have been found in South Muddy creek in the past.

You may arrive and leave whenever you need to but the cost will be the same.

I am contemplating something different for this outing that will be announced later.

Let me know if you are interested and any questions you have that I may not have answered.

Regards,

Al

I need anyone that is still interested in this outing to re-confirm so I can have a solid head count.

We are going to do something we haven't done in recent history for this one. The Chapter is going to sponsor this outing with $300 going toward the total. That means if we have then people it would be 10x$75=$750-$300=$450/10=$45 each.

We need to cap participation somewhere around 15 -20 people.

Thanks,

Al

Thank you Allen Trotter for doing something for the GPAA members that $300.00 is a benefit for the members and that's what we need at this point and time for the club.

Keep up the good work Al

Mike,

I would assume we pay when we get there, since the money goes directly to the owner. This is a private piece of land, I am not sure about the hook ups or camp sites. Al would know more about that. The chapter will be putting X dollars in on the total cost, which is min, 750.00

I copy Al. You just broke Phoebe's heart anyway. She loves the rain. Tell Richard we'll still be looking forward to it at a later date. Thanks, Don.

For those that haven't been there the route in is very rain sensitive.

1. The camping areas are in the flood plain.
2. There is a creek crossing to get to the back side of the property. Through the creek.
3. The road is steep going down, and when wet 2wd is not advisable.

We are going to get it rescheduled.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Thanks for the slideshow Al. Yes it was a little on the cool side but it was another great outing in Treasure Valley. Thank you Richard for allowing us to use your property - we had a great time. I haven't had a chance to clean our cons yet but I will try to get to them soon and will post pics of what we got. How about any one else ???. I no the "gold guy" had some from the little he did clean out and I no Smokey had some....seen it in the riffles ? Daryl??? How did the high banking go?

I have not run all of my con's yet, but we did do some sampling, we did pretty good, I gave all that I found as of right now to Justin and Heather. They had a blast, found a lot of gem stones, some good garnets, tourmaline and some smokey quartz. The more loose pile of dirty and the top of the pile dirty from those dig piles was the best for the gold.  Its small stuff, but so far it was plentiful.

They and I are ready to go back in the spring. It was very cool to say the least, but we had a blast.

Hello everyone, this is Sam. I want to thank everyone for helping me get my feet wet and learn the basics of panning. I really enjoyed the trip and would love to come out to meet with you folks at coker creek.
Jeff gave me his business card with his phone number.. But unfortunately I've misplaced it.

I look forward to meeting you all again!

Hey Sam, it was great getting to know you, and we all were glad we were able to help out. You was a brave soul staying in that cabin with no heat.  If you ever need any of us, feel free to reach out here or you can contact me directly at 615-830-6990 or email darylt01@bellsouth.net

I hope you found some gold that day.

Thanks Daryl. I will be in touch. I still have some gravel to pan. Ive found a bit of color but nothing too substantial. I'm still working on my panning technique. Quick question for you, I've tried panning in my garage in the evening after work. I've used an LED light but i find it difficult to really see the gold without real sunlight. I've also tried incandescent light but i find it to be yellowish and other minerals will look golden. Would fluorescent light be better?

Thanks!

You can buy daylight lamps at almost any hardware store. They do make a daylight fluorescent light.
I find anything white and bright works fine.
Personally I use a LED desk lamp with 4 rows of lights.
