McAllister Branch

Land Status: Public; Cherokee National Forest, Tellico Ranger District

GPS Coordinates: - 35.25995, - 84.27509

From Tellico Plains follow 68 South and go left on Unicoi Lakes Road (Directly across from Coker Creek Baptist Church). Drive until you come to the National Forest marker. You can park at the pull off just past Coker creek on the left or before you get to the creek there is some room on the left to pull out. Make sure you don't park hanging out in the road and don't camp along the road. Go upstream approximately 1/8 mile and you will see the creek come in to Coker Creek on the right. Follow the creek upstream through the flat and you will come to three forks of the creek. The left fork is the best, but only the first 60 feet or so is National Forest. From there up is private property. The middle fork is very nice with lots of turns and small cascades, but the gold is very sparse in my experience. I have had no luck in the right fork at all.

Regulations: No Dredging is allowed. Sluicing and panning are allowed with a permit. Make sure you follow the rules in this area as this is a very sensitive place and the Rangers will write you up if you break the rules.

Where and how to find the gold:  In the left fork there is plenty of fine gold in here as well as flakes and occasional pickers. DO NOT GO UPSTREAM ONTO THE PRIVATE PROPERTY. There is exposed bedrock in some locations so take a sucker tube. The better gold will be in bedrock cracks and depressions. The middle fork has minimal gold for me so far.
