November outing
« on: October 24, 2012, 10:59:07 PM »
Its almost November again and time for another outing. I'm sure everybody hates that. Haha. This outing will replace the normal meeting, but we will still have a raffle and a short meeting to discuss new issues.

It looks like the 3rd or 4th Saturday will work best. Again I am looking for input from anybody that wants to attend. Don't let me influence you, pick a spot. We can try a local spot or I know several in Georgia if everybody wants to burn some fuel. Let's hear it. I'm game for anything right now.

LOL.. we really need a 'like' button for some of the posts here on the forum :)

An outing sounds fun.  Why dont you list a few places, and maybe some members will go "Hey, That is a Great Spot!"  LOL   I am only familar with a few places (natty creek, coker creek, wildcat creek) so I cant offer suggestions on where to go.  GA would be a nice drive as long as the weather isnt NASTY like today was!!

Mrs Dash,  Check out the "Places to Prospect for Gold" section in the forum. That would give you a good idea of some of the options. I a, familiar with all of these locations since I created this forum section.

mrs dash ive prospected in ga for last 20 years.there are quite a few good creeks there but it is a drive.al i suggested the wildcat location  for last outing so im not above throwing some names in the hat for a location.im a little unfamiliar with creeks in tn. so dont know seasonal levels.
if'n i had my druthers i'd druther be huntin' purdy yeller rocks.

When does the official "Hunting Season" end for Monroe and Polk County?

This might narrow our options.

I'll throw out a couple of Tennessee Creeks that are on the list. Citico Creek and Mill Branch. Any comments on those?

Citico would be the best option, if the water level is low enough. Lots of exposed bedrock and such. Plenty of parking and easy access to the creek for sure.

Mill Branch, in Polk Co., is in prime hunting territory, but I'm game. (No pun intended)
There is a short hike to the creek and from that point folks can venture up or down stream.

Citico is still good for water level right now. I was there today. I have tried it 4 times now and have never been skunked. But I have never found any really good spots. The advantage of going there would be that a lot of people could cover a lot of ground and maybe find a good spot. The down side is that many (including me) could get skunked. But its a risk I am willing to take. The scenery is OUTSTANDING!

Mill Branch; Only tried once and got a little color. Okay to be game as long as you're not the kind of game that's in season. lol! Advantage of going there same as above. There was some serious placer mining there back in the day. And the geology is unusual for the area. Almost entirely magnetic black sand.

Yes to Citico and the only issue I have with Turkey Creek would be parking. Both seem to be hard places to find gold, but very easy on the eyes.

Al i was thinking the same thing :) there is a camp site right close to there, if we get it worked out i can bring some wood and a chainsaw so we could have a "community" bonfire :)

There are probably 20 campsites along Citico Creek. The best ones look to be 4, 4A, 7, 8, 9, and Jake Best.

Only Young Branch needs to be reserved. Jake Best costs $6 per day per site, and is first come, first serve. All of the numbered sites are first come, first serve and free.

camp sites have water/electric? ***LITTLE*** chance we might make it. seriously doubt the wife will want to go. one girl will for sure, other, who knows? room enough at campsites for 35ft fleetwood? i'll mention it to wife, she's been wanting to get out and go camping so theres still a slim chance.

Al, If we wear grass skirts, at least we could see where the gas is coming from.

I hope no one sets too close to the fire. I don't want anymore of those hot coals blown all over me again! It's bad enough getting rocks thrown at me all day let alone having holes burnt into my cloths.  ???

yeah, i got a onboard generator but its a hit/miss proposition to use it. just up and dies whenever it wants to. truly don't even know if it has electric heat or propane heat. hope to make it. i can throw my portable generator on a cargo rack on the back, but don't know for sure what i'll do for heat later. probably gonna be cold. i'll check into it tomorrow or saturday and see what i come up with.

most ALL campers ive seen have gas heat, and the blowers run off 12 volts, so make sure your battery is charged

well didn't get to fiddle with it tonite. ended up going to knoxville and getting a dadgum craigs list special. found a nice grill for $50. one of the big ones, propane w/side burner on one end, charcoal on the other end. charcoal side never been lit. plans are to add a side burner box on the charcoal end so i can also smoke with it, mount it on a trailer and be set. hope to fiddle with rv tomorrow.

well, looks like we're going to try to make it. we're probably going to head down friday afternoon. i looked up directions in the where to prospect section but it was kindly vague on directions for the campsites. directions/landmarks would be great. at least being the time of year it is, don't have to worry bout annie getting stung on the foot like on kids day.  :'(

I hope to there. This is my first post and my first trip with experienced people. I am very excited. Work will be the only draw back. It is wonderful that everyone is willing to share their experiences with newbies.

Larry Jordan,

I have taken 3 new members out with us to show them the ropes on prospecting so far and by the end of the day all 3 have a good understanding and gold to take back with them.

Outings like this one coming up is an outstanding opportunity for anyone new to work with several experienced and novice prospectors and a good chance to see the different types of equipment they use. Mostly a shovel and pan! LOL  :)

But all joking aside, for anyone new to prospecting or anyone wanting to try it, this is one meeting you do not want to miss. Whether it is for the day or the whole weekend.

if you make it look me up and il help ya out with just about anything on it, ive been working on them off and on for years, i do small engines too so maybe we can look at the generator...  this is what my camper that il bring over looks like.... and the truck

well, got it out yesterday. had gen running for 30 minutes or so. didn't quit yet. on what mickey mouse amount of papers/books i got with it, i have discovered it's supposed to have propane furnace. found thermostat, no idea if it works or not. inside was 75 when i got in it to mess around. gonna fiddle with furnace this evening. still trying to locate the battery for starting the 454. 2 nice big batterys right behind the grill, but prev. owner said those were the coach batteries, not the engine battery. any idea on that?

well id have to look at it to see the batteries but most of the coach (living part) battery are under the camper in a compartment,  ALSO most all rvs have a low gas shut off on the generator, if the gas tank is at a 1/4 or less the generator will start and die, they do this so if you are camping somewhere and are running the generator they make sure you have enough gas in the rv to get to a station.... look at the batteries under the hood and see if they are hooked together? if they are then id say they are for the coach, if not 1 might be for the start and 1 for the coach, im better with pictures or hands on :)

this i THINK is the easiest way in, from 75 it looks like you take 68 east to 411 north to ballplay rd going east ballplay turns into 360 for a short ways then turn left on chestnut valley road then a left on buck hwy and a left on citico road for about 2 miles i think to the camp areas ( or at least thats the way i took in there the last time i went)

The wife and I just got a 96 "Born Free" 24' RV

Open propane valve; set thermostat to say 65, furnace blower should come on first, then furnace lights and almost instant heat.

When starting gen , mine says you have to hold the start button in until gen comes up to speed or it will continually die.

Finding out these tricks one at a time as I learn the new RV.

Maybe go on line and find an owners manual?

Most gens. are designed to quit running after fuel tank on MH is under 1/2 full.  That way ya don't get stranded out in the boonies.  Perhaps your fuel could be right at the cut off point and walking around in MH giggles the limit switch. (?)
One time I had a spider build a nest in the carb. intake.  That was a troubleshooting nightmare!

slowly making progress. turned on propane, took several trys but furnace finally fired up and blew nice warm heat. have over 1/2 tank of gas. generator seems to be running a bit better. time will tell if it will stay running as we drive. batterys behind grill are indeed hook in line so i assume those are coach bats. still haven't located chassis bat. going to replace both coach bats, on bat tester over stove, bat 1 shows junk, bat 2 shows 3/4 good. figure i'll get 2 new, keep decent one for truck and turn in 2 junkers. going to get water tank filled up and make sure theres no issues on the freshwater holding tank. never used it yet. so its shaping up pretty good.

thguy, thanks for the directions. i  *should* be able to find my way.

are there charcoal grills at camp ground? we're making up some fresh brats, probably tomorrow evening, figure i'll bring severa lbs of brats, buns, kraut & mustard to go round. if there aren't any grills, i'll just bring one.

Louie

don't think i'll have much problems. all i do know is the road is small and inside the park. i also know i'm bigger than most everything except for a peterbilt etc, and some dump trucks, neither of which i expect to see so not going to fret over it. 8) actually I enjoy driving this behemoth! just can't justify doing to to get groceries. :-\

this sounds interesting. i was about to make a post with some questions about backwoods camping, and what you were allowed to do inside the park. i saw some spots along wildcat i would like to camp. i would like to come this weekend, but i have a dog at home and i wasn't sure about bringing him along (can't leave him at home by himself that long).

also edit: i shot two deer yesterday morning (at once...) in my back yard. the guy that lives next to me put corn out and told me to shoot anything i saw. some how i got two, one on the run, both instant kill shots. so i could bring enough meat for everyone, i know venison isn't some peoples favorite though.

We will get there early Saturday morning. I have to work Friday and will be too pooped to travel. The count on our end is 2 Me and MrsDash and our rig is a Tent with heat! LOL

MrsDash makes a killer pasta salad that goes good with brats.

LTScherer,

Imported german kraut! You are serious about your brats! I use to be in the military and you could soak saw dust in vinegar and I wouldn't know the difference! LOL

samuel,

I wouldn't worry if anyone don't like deer. Just take theirs and roll it around in the ashes and they will never know! LOL  MrsDash will probably eat it all if you bring it. Both MrsDash and I hunt deer and usually kill 4 or 5 a year. Last year she killed a big doe and a 8 point right next to our tent sitting in a camp chair!  :o

arc, thats the way to hunt. sitting at camp, lift rifle and there ya go. nothing else involved. I guess ya could call it *serious* on my food. I've been all over europe and like their kraut much better than the stuff ya get here in a can or even the cold stuff in a bag. don't feel like making it fresh, it takes too long. so i'll just bring some prepped imported. i'll post ya up a pic or 2 in a few hours so ya can start the lip smakkin. lookin forward to that pasta salad.

NOW THAT IS EXCITEMENT IN A SKIN!!! When will you start cooking? I will have to be there!

My boss will not be happy with me because I just might have to miss work on Friday. Now just how big of a hole do you need to prospect in! LOL

Both my wife and myself are from German descendants. My last name use to be actually spelled Dasch and my wifes family is Majerus, someone along the line left out the "C" in Dasch.

Making sour kraut is time consuming! I have help my mother several times filling 8 gallon churns with hand shredded cabbage and help out with canning all the kraut. I'll have to check and see if she has any left. If she does I have to warn you that she cans her kraut with a jalapeno pepper up next to the lid.

larry jordan,
here are the directions from the *where to go* section*. tnguy also posted similar directions bringing me in from I75, it might be back on page 2 of the thread. how many in your party? I wanna make sure there's enough brats for everybody saturday. you can look above for pics of our campers so you can find us easier.

From Vonore take State Route 360 off of Highway 411 and drive several miles until you come to Citico Creek Road. Go left and follow Citico Creek road for several miles again (sorry, I don't have the exact distances) until you come to the creek. The road will follow the creek for a long ways and there are several pull-offs along the way.

dalebec
thanks, hope your hungry, right now, i got around 30 links.

arc,
i got em in the fridge so the spices can meld and make em more flavorful. tonite i'll put em in a turkey roaster and give em a slow bath till they reach 160 or so internal temp (fully cooked). that way saturday, just roll em around on the grill to warm n brown em. no waiting to cook em trying to not have em split etc.etc.etc.... much simpler to poach em and reheat em as necessary. yes, skins on, i use natural casings. none of that imitation fake stuff. probably going to do some chicken brats for me tomorrow evening. pork and my gout don't mix well at all. the fry test last nite before i stuffed em did pass with flying colors though. my chicken brats i might even throw on the smoker with some hickory/apple for a few hours. did this 3 weeks ago with some left over pork brats i did up for a party, good grief, they smelled like bacon as i warmed em in a cast iron skillet and tasted just like a smoked brat should.

beats me on hole size, this the 4th time we've been panning. we'll worry bout it when we get there.  ::)hole size for consumption of said brats, is as big as you can open. brats average a inch n larger, buns i get at sams are BIG too. hope yer hungry.

im 1/2 german myself. dad was full german blood. our family tree kept our C in our name, Scherer. our clan came from the Boden area in germany in mid/late 1800s. we never done up fresh kraut when i was growing up, i'm kindly self taught on it as well as sausages. halapeenyer pepper, WOW, don't matter where its placed in the bottle once its in there. don't care for spicy stuff much, as long as it doesn't overpower it, i can see where it would put a very nice spin on kraut.

The directions are really easier than they look. From Vonore follow 360. When 360 turns right towards Tellico Plains go straight instead. Then just keep going. The campsites start at about 20 miles from Vonore.

if your punching coordns. into gps, first set of numbers should be +. if punched into google maps with the *****  -  ****** sign, it takes you to the south pacific 750 or so miles west of santiago chili. ???just be sure to use the + instead of - before 35.48719.....

I just found this link http://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1552/report.pdf that may be of interest. It deals with the mineral resources in the Citico Creek Wilderness Study area (which is off limits), but does speak to the general geology and presence of gold in the area. Some terms may not be familiar but I may be able to explain them around the campfire if anybody is interested.

I'm going to try my best to be there Friday by 12:30 so I can pick the campsite. It will be between campsites 6 through 9. If one of you gets there before me pick the best from those four and I will find you.
