Corundum from Chunky Gal Mountain / Buck Creek area
« on: October 01, 2013, 08:36:42 PM »
Here are a few pictures of some corundum I have found in the above listed area. Corundum is the mineral name for Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3). In gem quality grade it would be called ruby or sapphire. Most of mine is not gem quality, but fun to dig up anyway. The area is about 70 miles east of Coker Creek off of highway 64.

Nice pieces guys.  Buck & Herbert Cks. have been a little stingy the past few years.  I sure would like to be able to run my sluice up there, or better yet my dredge.   ::)

A couple more facts I forgot to include.

1. Corundum is the second hardest mineral, being only diamond, and is 9 on the mohs hardness scale.
2. Corundum is moderately heavy with a specific gravity of almost 4.

The whole area is covered up with it. If you would like I can post some maps that show the old mines and cuts. It's pretty interesting stuff.

Here is a map of two for the area showing the mines and cuts. I wish I had this much info for the gold mines around here. :-)

Test, this is just a test post as I think we are having some issues with some posts not getting counted. No response needed as I will work on this today. Allen you seem to be stuck at 1001 posts. More on this soon.

TnGuy, no I did not delete any posts. The forum is having a slight issue and I am looking into it. I have not deleted any posts in the past 30 days. At least Big Al got over 1000 posts. Now he is stuck at 1001. I am not sure what the problem is yet. If anyone else is not seeing their post numbers going up every time they make a post, , please let me know asap.
