US Forest Service Rules Update
« on: July 05, 2015, 01:22:19 AM »
Hi everyone,
I was trying to wait until I had all of the correct information, because I do not want this issue getting confused. This is the best information I have at this time and is subject to change. It is always best at this point, if you plan on prospecting in the Cherokee National Forest. to contact the Districtic Ranger's Station first. THe rules in the Ocoee district will vary from the rules in the Tellico District.
The District Supervisor is out tof town until July 17 so do not look for any definitive answers before that time. There will not befinal rules until the Office of General Counsel for the Dept. of the Interior makes it ruling.
I spoke with the new Tellico District Ranger several days ago. According to her We can use our Class 1 equipment in Lyons Creek and Wildcat creeks only. According to her, Doc Rogers Field is off limits for all prospecting. She is also under the impression that Lower Coker Creek is off limits to all prospecting, but could not confirm that.
Also according to her, most of our class 1 prospecting equipment is acceptable to use. She did not have an answer concerning sucker tubes, and she thought that we would be able to use a folding shovel, but not a number 2 shovel.
I am trying to get in touch with the Ocoee Ranger to discuss what is permissable in his district and will updae you all as soon as I have any details.

I plan to stop by the Ocoee Ranger Station Wed morning and talk with them. Richard, let me know if I can help out. Sometimes talking in person helps.

No problem. I was driving right past there on my way to Cleveland on Wed. Just thought I would make the offer since you live so far away.
