Spring Outing
« on: February 24, 2018, 08:12:27 PM »
As anyone that was at last Saturday's meeting is aware, one thing that we want to do this year is have more outings.

This year I would like to do one for Spring, Summer, & Fall. Treasure Valley is not available at this point so we are looking elsewhere. Nothing is "cast in stone" yet, but I am proposing A weekend outing in the Allatoona Lake area of North Georgia. I propose that we camp at McKinney campground (COE run), and we will have many creeks in the area to try. We can even split into groups and try different creeks. I know the area well and can make recommendations on where to go.

McKinney campground is open year round and has really nice facilities. The cost per campsite is $28 per night, with 8 people max to a campsite. We can probably get several sites together at this point. https://www.recreation.gov/camping/mckinney-campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=71289

What I need to know in the short term is how many would be interested. This would likely be March 30-April1.

Thanks,

Al

I will be interested in this, luckily this will fall on one of the weekends on my Spring break. Al, is this more basic camping like tent and fire because that's what ill likely be doing?

The campsites do have hookups, but tent camping works too.

Here is some additional information:
Additional first-come, first-serve campsites may be available
Maximum of two pets are permitted per campsite
Maximum of eight people per campsite
Maximum of three vehicles per campsite
Off-road vehicles, golf carts and ATVs are not permitted
Entrance gate is locked from 10:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. (Please note: From October 1 to March 31 entrance gate is locked from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.)

We can get more than one tent into a site and people can share tents/campers to reduce the cost. I really like this campground and area. I know the area well so let's put a group together. For those who don't like to cook there are good restaurants in the area. Trust me on that.

I failed to consider that that would be Easter weekend, and the start of Turkey Season. With that in mind I am proposing the weekend of April 7-8. This can be a day outing, or an overnite outing at each person's discretion. I would like to know how many are interested and in what duration so I can book campsites.

Thanks,

Hello Al, I should be able to attend and looking forward to getting my boots into the water. What equipment is allowed? Are sluices, classifiers, and sucker tubes allowed?, or is it pan and shovel? Thanks, Don.

No sluices. Pan & #2 shovels are good. I have used a sucker tube and they have never said anything. It's your judgement on that since they don't really say.

Looking forward to it.

I would like a final count and confirmation of who is interested and can go on this outing, and who will be staying on Saturday night.

Al, I'll be able to be there on Saturday. I won't be able to stay Saturday night. What are  the directions, place and time to meet, etc.? I'll be coming from Chattanooga, on I-75. Thanks, Don.

Will be there as far as I know. I need to know where we are going to meet up and what time to be there. I most likely won't be camping Saturday night.

Sounds like a day outing to me.

We will meet off Exit 278 (Acworth) around 11:00 am Saturday. There used to be a Big Lots on the left as quick as you come off of the Interstate and go right. That will be a good meeting spot. I think there is a Waffle House there too, but it has been a while since I have been there.

All,

There is a 90% chance of rain for the area on Saturday. And the temps aren't too warm either. I am going to keep an eye on the forecast through tomorrow. There is a good chance we may need to reschedule for the following Saturday.

All,

Based on the fact that the weather forecast for Saturday is still not good I am going to postpone this outing until the following Saturday. I hope interested parties can still attend. Please let me know who will be attending.

Thanks,

We had a great day for the outing. Finally some good sunny, warm weather. Here is a link to my video. https://youtu.be/ekkxTPhP4jo

Attendees: Allen Trotter (me), Evan Trotter, Don Staton, Austinj Brooks, & Gary (Sleepy).

The location was Owl Creek in Cherokee County, Georgia. It is a continuation of the Dahlonega Gold Belt.

Hello Al, just wanted to say I had a great time in the creek yesterday, as I'm sure everyone else did, also. It couldn't have been a more pleasant outing, and enjoyed everyone's company. I haven't finished my cons yet, but am very happy with what I've found so far. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting next Sat. Ready to head back to Owl Creek anytime anyone wants to go. Just watched the video. You could see that Phoebe was getting into it also. Thanks, Don.

looks like you all had a great day and found some nice gold. Sorry Smokey and I couldn't make it....major vehicle issues. spending what ever free time between work replacing wheel bearings, rotors, pads and such. looks like a great spot... will have to get directions from Al and make a trip there on one of our next journeys to Ga. Hope to see everyone at the meeting Saturday.
