Franklin, NC outing
« on: September 09, 2018, 10:57:17 PM »
All,

As I have mentioned before we would like to do a non-gold outing to Franklin, NC to one of the pay to dig places. I am thinking Saturday, September 29 will be the best date.

There are several locations available. Some you pay by the day and some by the bucket. I would like a count of who is interested and any preference for the fee structure.

Thanks,

Al

Al, as you know I'm in. For anyone who has never been to Franklin,N.C. it is a beautiful place. Anyone needing info can call the Franklin Chamber of Commerce at 866-372-5546, or 828-524-3161, and they will send out a packet of info-free of charge. Thanks, Don.

To Al and all members, there is a Gem, Mineral, and Fossil show in Asheville, NC. this weekend. It is hosted by the MAGMA club in Nc. It will be at Camp Stephens, which is exit 33 off I-26, which is south of Asheville. 9-6 Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday. There is camping on-site. Call 828-779-4501- Rick. I forget the entry fee, but Rick can let you know, and it will be reasonable. There is also a rock swap. This is a very good Rockhounding club, and they have several events each year. Check the Magma website for more info. As most folks know, Gold prospecting and rock hounding go hand, and even compliment each other. Thanks, Don.

Here is the plan. We will meet up around 10:00 am next Saturday at the Rose Creek Gem Mine. We will start there and if anyone wants to branch out from there feel welcome. There are several pay to dig locations in the area with both native and non-native slated buckets. This will be a group outing, but will not be limited to one location. Beyond the start this will be open.

Guests and non-members are invited to join as well. This is a pay per bucket location. I have never been to this one myself, but have heard good things.

Here is a link to their website. http://www.rosecreekmine.com/

Hope to see you there,

Al

Dont forget that Buck Creek is not too far from that area. Great place to  find some natural gemstones. And it's free too!  ;)

To all,
I, and Daryll and Vicki McCurry arrived at 10:00am. They purchased a Ruby and Sapphire bucket and I believe they were very happy. I'll have to let them make a post of what they found. I purchased a Ruby and Sapphire bucket for $30.00 and found a 364 carat Sapphire, plus a 76 ct., 46 ct., and many 25-30 ct. Sapphires and Rubies. The total was over 1300 carats. There are many cuttable stones, with several star grades of red, grape, grey, black. Most are very solid with little fracturing or pitting. I also purchased a $50.00 bucket of enriched material. There is always very good cutting material in these buckets, along with several specimens. I've never been dis-appointed with what I've gotten from The Rose Creek Mine, and I've been going there for several years now. Saturday was the perfect day to be outside and the scenery in the area is beautiful all around. After we left Rose creek, we stopped and ate lunch, and then went to Ruby City Gems in downtown Franklin. I've been there several times and love it every time.  They have jewelry, specimens, lapidary equipment, cuttable material, and what I like the best is their museum in the basement. It is awesome, and it's free. Al arrived after we had left. I think he worked the native material out of their tunnel. This material comes from their mine, and it takes a lot more work to screen this material and it is $5.00 a bucket, that you dig yourself. Al may be able to post what he found. I've been to several mines in the past and have really liked them all, but I've gotten to know the owners of the mine and like talking to them and always have a great time there. Also, Franklin is having a Gem Show the weekend of our GPAA meeting, and it is a good time to go there after the meeting, to the show, and even stop at one of the mines. I usually hit Chunky Gal Mountain also, as it's usually good weather for hiking and rockhounding. That would have to be the next day. Thanks, Don.
