Coker Creek - Above Unicoi Lakes Road

Land Status: Public; Cherokee National Forest, Tellico Ranger District, Monroe County, TN.

GPS Coordinates: 35.25792, -84.27655

Access:

From Tellico Plains follow 68 South and go left on Unicoi Lakes Road (Directly across from Coker Creek Baptist Church). Drive until you come to the National Forest marker. You can park at the pull off just past the creek on the left or before you get to the creek there is some room on the left to pull out. Make sure you don't park hanging out in the road and don't camp along the road. Go upstream for this location. You can go approximately 1/4 mile upstream to the National Forest boundary. Do not go across the gravel road / driveway that crosses the creek.

Regulations: No Dredging is allowed. Sluicing, panning and Sucker Tubes are allowed with a permit. Make sure you follow the rules in this area as this is a very sensitive place and the Rangers will write you up if you break the rules.

Where and how to find the gold:  There is plenty of fine gold in here as well as flakes and occasional pickers and nuggets. There is exposed bedrock in some locations so take a sucker tube. The better gold will be in bedrock cracks and depressions. Some gravel bars will show good amounts of fine gold. The gold is not hard to find, but the area has been worked hard.
